Hi everyone! My name is Ivy and I’m 20 years young. I’m in my third year at UVic, second year in the linguistics program and I love it. When I’m not wrapped up in my schoolwork or jobs, I really enjoy playing piano and spending time outdoors (I am an incessant tree climber). I also care for my pet shrimp, one of them is currently pregnant which means I’m about to become a grandma!
Personal Learning Reflection
What is your preferred mode of remote communication?
For school settings, I usually communicate with my peers through email or Instagram direct messages, however I’m excited to learn to navigate Mattermost!
What are your communication strengths?
I think I am generally an effective communicator, I’m very direct and my ideas are usually well articulated and well received by those I share with. I’ve always enjoyed teaching others, even from a young age answering my friends’ questions in math class when our teacher was busy, so I also think I’m well practiced at expressing complicated ideas in simple terminology.
What are your communication weaknesses? Where would you like to grow?
I sometimes struggle with the confidence to express my ideas, especially in large group settings, so I appreciate the small sized learning pods as I find it much easier to communicate with people I know better. I also feel that engaging with these groups will be a stepping stone to help build my confidence, as I work my way up to sharing with larger groups.
Do you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert?
In my general life and when meeting friends I’m definitely an extrovert, however in school I am a bit more introverted as I tend to sometimes keep my head down and focus on my work. I’m excited to have a class that will push me out of my comfort zone in this regard.
What time zone are you in?
PST, I’m living right here in Victoria!
What time of day do you prefer doing academic work?
I tend to buckle down and work most in the afternoons and evenings, however I often feel inspired as I go about my day since I tend to keep my schoolwork in the back of my mind, so I jot notes throughout the day.
When you are upset do you tend to share this with others or keep it to yourself?
I often keep my feelings to myself unless I feel like they require some sort of resolution. Usually I am happy to process my emotions on my own or share a vent with a close friend or my mom, skipping any sort of confrontation with whoever may have upset me. That said, I don’t get upset very often, I am generally quite positive and resilient.
What do you like about group work?
I really appreciate when my peers bring different perspectives and reference knowledge from other classes that I haven’t taken. I find it very interesting and informative, and I also appreciate the inspiration for my schedule in the coming semesters.
What don’t you like about group work?
Group work sometimes scares me as I’ve had situations wherein group members were not pulling their own weight. Their lack of contribution stressed me out because I value my grades as well as the academic effort that I had already put into our project. However, I know that these are rare cases and I have overall had very positive group work experiences wherein I often leave conversations pondering new ideas and even a sense of personal growth and development.
What else would you like your team to know?
How pumped I am to work with you guys!!!! We’re gonna kill it 🙂
